Week 11

The Rise of TikTok and its Popularity

You ever wanted to to enjoy videos less than a minute but longer than seven seconds? TikTok is the app for you! This new social media platform has been the hot topic this past year allowing users to upload minute long content as a source for entertainment. TikTok has occupied more than a billion active accounts containing users from all around the world varying in different backgrounds.

TikTok is owned by a Chinese company that allows users to post an unlimited amount of videos that are less than a minute, to make make these posts exciting to watch the app generates several filters, effects, and audio/music that can be added into the videos to make it look nicer and and more fun to use. The app is available from the App Store for IOS and Android users for a total of one billion downloads in the past year.

I would say that the sudden rise of popularity in this app is due to the original video sharing apps such as Musically and its predecessor Vine. Vine was the first video sharing app that had a time limit, unlike Youtube users were more comfortable sharing and producing short videos because it didn't take too much effort to edit and produce which enters the early adopters in this kind of social media platform. Since Vine was so iconic and life changing for some at its time TikTok videos with some real quality content that's uploaded have the potential of being named "radiates Vine energy" which is probably one of the best compliments you can get on a TikTok. The early majority of the group would have to be the Musically users when is was more of lip syncing videos which was then legally changed to TikTok in 2018. The tipping point with video sharing platforms (disregarding Youtube) would be TikTok encompassing all kinds of videos such as dancing, lip syncing , informational, relatable, trending videos, etc.

I can't say when the downfall or late adopters/laggards will come into place with such an unpredictable growth of popularity with the app, but I will say this app has made a massive influence on influencers and the users themselves creating and continuing these "TikTok trends" while making them famous.

Enjoy this compilation of TikToks that radiate the same energy as Vine.
