Week 14

What is Citizen Journalism?

Citizen journalism is becoming pretty popular lately due to the easy access with social media platforms. Citizen journalism is where people like you and me share information from any type of platform i.e Instagram, personal blogs, Facebook etc. So far this means of spreading news had been helpful for many by making others aware of information that they may not have seen on the news or for those that don't watch the news or read newspapers in general. It allows for citizens to speak on the behalf of unvoiced or under appreciated comments and concerns by the public who don't really have a chance to share what they know. It's also is a useful means of helping social movements like Black Lives Matter, Gay Rights Movement, etc. where the public could message their needs and wants to those that are of higher authority and to other non-standing or neutral citizens.

However of course, there is the question on how reliable these sources are since they come from ordinary lives with no professional journalistic backgrounds. It's hard to tell who is telling the truth and why we should believe what these people say when it comes from someone we've never heard about. Nowadays it's easy for just anyone to photoshop or edit videos to try and manipulate what the public thinks so they can get attention and make something thats false into "facts". Another downside to citizen journalism is that if you really want to get people's attention and create a news story its hard to reach the the general public when you have a small following and no one's subscribed to you yet. This kind of makes it difficult for citizens having them believe that no one is going to hear what they have to say making their opinions obsolete retiring from citizen journalism.
